Abstract
The authors present a report on the discussions that took place during a conference organized in November 1997 by the Division of Research Services at the National Archives of Canada on issues connected with reference. The conference program dealt with four major themes: services to researchers at the dawn of the year 2000, the indexing and description of documents, protection of the rights of authors and their research, and archival service to researchers. The authors summarize the concerns of the participants, who came from diverse working environments and had varying experiences and conceptions of public service. The wealth of these discussions and the importance of the questions which were raised clearly demonstrate that reference is a fundamental part of the archival function.
