Abstract
This text examines the current state of Acadian archives and the challenges facing record-keepers and researchers who are interested in these records. Archival repositories that hold Acadian records are identified in several countries and regions that had a stake in the colonization of Acadia during the early French Colonial Period (1604–1713). The destruction of Acadian records during the Seven Years’ War, as well as the creation of new records in the many countries where the exiled Acadians settled after the deportations (1755–1763) is discussed. Finally, the challenges inherent to the nature of the Acadian records as belonging to an “international archives” are explored.
RÉSUMÉ
Ce texte examine l’état actuel des archives acadiennes et les défis que doivent relever les gestionnaires de documents et les chercheurs qui s’intéressent à ces documents. L’auteur identifie les institutions archivistiques qui conservent des documents acadiens dans plusieurs pays et régions qui s’intéressaient de près ou de loin à la colonisation de l’Acadie au début de la période de la colonisation française (1604– 1713). Il explore la destruction des documents acadiens pendant la Guerre de Sept Ans, ainsi que la création de nouveaux documents dans les nombreux pays d’adoption des Acadiens exilés après les déportations (1755–1763). Enfin, il considère les défis inhérents à la nature même des documents acadiens en tant que partie constituante des « archives internationales ».
Authors of manuscripts accepted for publication retain copyright in their work. They are required to sign the Agreement on Authors' Rights and Responsibilities that permits Archivaria to publish and disseminate the work in print and electronically. In the same agreement, authors are required to confirm that "the material submitted for publication in Archivaria, both in its paper and electronic versions, including reproductions of other works (e.g. photographs, maps, etc.) does not infringe upon any existing copyright." Authors of manuscripts accepted for publication retain copyright in their work and are able to publish their articles in institutional repositories or elsewhere as long as the piece is posted after its original appearance on archivaria.ca. Any reproduction within one year following the date of this agreement requires the permission of the General Editor.
