"I make a lot of clothes for my family": The 1937-1939 Family Income and Expenditure Survey at the Dominion Bureau of Statistics

Abstract

In this article, the author discusses a previously undiscovered group of records – the 1937–1939 Family Income and Expenditure Surveys. Created by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, these surveys are a rich source of information about the income and spending habits of Canadians during the latter stage of the Depression.

Dans cet article, l’auteure examine un groupe de documents d’archives découverts récemment – les relevés de revenu et de dépenses familiaux, 1937–1939 (1937–1939 Family Income and Expenditure Surveys). Créés par le Bureau fédéral de la statistique, ces relevés représentent une source d’information importante au sujet du revenu et des habitudes de consommation des Canadiens et des Canadiennes pendant les dernières années de la Dépression.

Author Biography

Cara Downey
Cara Downey has been a Government records Archivist with Library and Archives Canada since 1999. She has worked in the Industry and Science portfolios, as well as with electronic records. She is currently the archivist responsible for Statistics Canada. She has developed 1901 and 1906 census on-line products and has spoken before national and international audiences on the history of the census. Ms. Downey has a B.A. in History from McGill University and an M.A. in History from the University of Toronto.
